I love composing music for children’s stories in verse.

Sometimes when I open the cover of a picture book and read the verses, the choice and rhythm of the words plus the illustrations suggest a mood and a style of music to me. A melody begins to play in my head and the words dance their way into a song.

As a composer, my job is to make the music tell the story:

The music can tickle and run and bounce
Or laugh or be sad or sleepy
Or be quiet … and slow … and sneaky …

When I’m done composing a story song, I know I have done my job well when the three vehicles of expression – words, illustrations and music – blend together so happily that one feels they have always been together.
